Job opportunities: Executive Secretary (ICZN) & Senior Manager/Manager (Operations and Visitor Services)

1. Executive Secretary, International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN)


The National University of Singapore (NUS), Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum invites applications for the Executive Secretary position for the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). We seek suitable candidates from around the world. The successful applicant will be a staff member at the NUS. Salary and benefits will commensurate with qualifications and experience. The initial appointment will be for one year, and renewable for a maximum of two years. Employment after that period will depend both on performance and availability of funds.

Major responsibilities of the position are:

1. Coordinating activities of the ICZN, under the direction of and in consultation with the ICZN Council (headed by the President), including
a. Communicating with Commissioners of the ICZN on the efficient conduct of routine business
b. Communicating with the scientific editor of The Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature, maintaining electronic sites where documents may be shared among Commissioners of the ICZN (such as those relevant to cases under consideration and to the Fifth Edition of the International Code of Nomenclature)
2. Tracking and inventorying public outreach of the ICZN by Commissioners
3. Conducting and managing elections of members of the ICZN Council and of Commissioners, under the direction of the ICZN Council
4. Acting as spokesperson for the ICZN as and when directed by the ICZN Council
5. Other related ICZN tasks as assigned by the President of the ICZN

The Executive Secretary will not have responsibilities for:

1. Activities that are the purview of a Commissioner of the ICZN
2. Fundraising for the ICZN


1. MSc or PhD degree in relevant disciplines
2. Demonstrated knowledge and track record of and interest in taxonomy and especially nomenclature
3. Excellent skills in
a. Scientific publication
b. Written and oral communication using English
c. Organization of international networks
d. Interpersonal interactions
4. Demonstrated familiarity with tools for electronic communication, both with individuals and for groups

The Executive Secretary will report to the President of the ICZN for all official duties pertaining to the ICZN, but managed through the Head of Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.

The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) is Singapore’s only natural history museum at the National University of Singapore. We are looking for a self-motivated and hands-on individual to plan and manage the museum’s gallery operations and visitor services.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and ensure the smooth operation of the gallery and visitor services from opening to closing time
  • Coordinate operations staff through hiring, training, evaluation and delegation of duties as necessary
  • Ensure the safety of customers, volunteers, and staff through the proper implementation and enforcement of emergency procedures
  • Prepare reports including visitor numbers, takings, lost and found, and customer feedback
  • Coordinate the use of all rental venues and operational requirements for events
  • Scheduling of volunteers for guiding services in the gallery
  • Ensure adequate advertising through display unit, brochures and posters in lobby for upcoming events
  • Oversee the smooth operations of the museum shop
  • Plan and execute marketing efforts to promote LKCNHM
  • Handle media/interview requests and queries


  • Degree from a recognized university
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a museum or public attraction, business development, public relations and marketing experience will be an asset
  • Must be able to work on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), Public Holidays and irregular hours as and when required
  • Able to work independently, possess good problem solving skills, resourceful and crisis management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, even temperament, ability to supervise effectively
  • Possess ability to effectively and professionally communicate at all levels, both verbal and written wise
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, organizational and management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle fast-paced environment with many unpredictable developments and rapid changes
